The best materials

During the late 80’s, a well known speaker maker redesigned its complete speaker lineup. The new products sported the latest and thus the best materials and construction: custom made cast aluminum baskets, highly compliant butyl surrounds, flat spiders, large vented motor structures, soft dome tweeters, etcetera. Needless to say, I was intrigued. Eager to hear what the latest in technology could bring, I drove to the closest retailer for an opportunity to audition their products. But, to my dismay, what I heard was unadulterated garbage. There was none of the romance promised by the rigorous use of such esoteric and selective grouping of materials.

Not satisfied with the disappointing experience, I tried once again but this time at a different outlet; all for nothing. I ended up with more of the same. Blah! What was then a disappointment, served to teach me an important lesson about listening with my ears and not through a spec-sheet. I learned that good ingredients do not a chef make.
